(ATLANTA, GA) Thirteen years ago, National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day began as a grassroots movement, created to mobilize Blacks around HIV/AIDS throughout the United States. On Saturday, November 30, 2013, Healthy Black Communities, Inc. launches its commemoration of more than a decade of doing HIV/AIDS prevention, education, testing, and treatment with its Annual Gala. Titled “Salute to the Founders!” The Gala will feature a lively silent auction, a delectable dinner, West African drummers, pouring of libations, and special performances by artists concerned about HIV/AIDS in Black America along with a VIP Reception for key sponsors and supporters.

During the Gala, Healthy Black Communities, Inc. will present the 2013 Black HIV/AIDS Hero Awards posthumous to key individuals who paved the way more than a decade ago for the company’s work during National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day in the United States:  Dr. Mark Colomb, Founder - National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day & My Brother's Keeper, Inc. and Luga J. Joseph, Founder - Healthy Black Communities, Inc. & Key Strategist for National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. In addition, 2013 Salute to the Founders will be given to those who sparked the fire and dedicated time, money, and resources to the fight against HIV/AIDS in Black communities.

Proceeds from the Gala support Healthy Black Communities, Inc.'s dynamic HIV/AIDS education and outreach programs nationally and internationally. More than 1,000,000 Blacks are mobilized and/or reached annually around National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day via health fairs, community forums, fraternities, sororities, colleges, universities, faith communities, and a host of social media platforms, including print and online media outlets. Events and activities held annually raise the awareness of HIV/AIDS in Black communities, mobilize individuals to get tested to learn their status, encourage those interested in leadership locally to get involved, and most importantly it connects those living with HIV/AIDS or newly testing HIV positive to consider treatment to improve the quality of Black Life.
